Here is a SAMPLER LIST of some of the “things” I’ve had a hand in. May they only fight for Good!
SCREENPLAYS
- THE RIG (feature, 120 pgs)
- The world’s oil supply is threatened when radicals take over the last and largest seafloor oil drilling rig.
- POSSIBILITIES (short, 12 pgs)
- Four different people imagine how a harmonica, a single leather boot, and a blood-stained jacket came to be in a restaurant bathroom.
VIDEOGAMES
- Age of Empires: The Age of Kings DS (Majesco / Ensemble)
- I was the Lead Designer on the project and did the majority of the writing. It was a great experience, and the game turned out pretty well. If you want 50+ hours of strategy fun on your handheld, get it. You can find it in the bargain bin these days (it released in Feb 06).
- Sonic Rivals PSP (SEGA)
- Lead Designer again. Working on one of the first Sonic Games made by an external developer was alternately inspiring, challenging, depressing, and relieving (in that order).
- Top Secret Project (DS)
- I’m currently leading the design on a way-cool action DS game being developed by Big Sandwich Games. More details soon!
- Monster Lab (Wii and DS)
- Before I left Backbone Entertainment to form Sigman Creative Services, I was working on this double-platform game about mad scientists making…well…what do you think?
BOARD AND CARD GAMES
- Night of the Ill-Tempered Squirrel
- A non-collectible card game where players compete to make the worst movies that they can.
- Published by Alien Menace Games in 2003, and by Mythrole Games in 1999
- Hexenhammer (tr. “Hammer of the Witches”)
- A modified version of Witch Hunt that was published by Sphinx Spieleverlag (Germany). Co-designed by Henning Poehl.
- In this version, villagers are burned instead of hanged, and some other adaptations are made to make the game’s satire fit German folklore a bit better.
- Witch Hunt
- A non-collectible card game where players try to incriminate everyone else’s villagers while keeping their own safe from the gallows.
- Published by Alien Menace Games in 2003, and by Mythrole Games in 1999
- Shrimpin’
- A non-collectible card game about…uhh…title says it all!
- Published by Alien Menace Games in 2003, and by Mythrole Games in 1999
- Mythrole: Merchants
- A strategy boardgame about cutthroat trading
- Published by Mythrole Games in 2000
- and many more prototypes and projects in the works!
RPGs and SUPPLEMENTS
- Worlds of the Dead Sourcebook, All Flesh Must Be Eaten Survival Horror RPG (Eden Studios)
- I wrote the “Beyond the Wall” setting. Take one part zombies, one part Roman invasion of England, one part unruly Picts, and one part Hadrian’s wall. Brainsss Romanus!
- Battle Cattle: Quest for the Holy Pail (Wingnut Games)
- I was a contributing writer to this silly project, and wrote all the D&D class conversion backgrounds, which basically consisted of coming up with non-stop cow puns. Thanks to Aldo Ghiozzi at Wingnut for giving me some work way back then when I was trying to escape being an engineer. Now I read the stuff and cringe.
SHORT STORIES
- “Martin’s Inferno”, part of the Origins Award-nominated zombie fiction anthology The Book of More Flesh
- This trilogy of zombie fiction anthologies has some amazing stories in it, and I’m happy to have contributed to one of the volumes.
- Martin’s Inferno mixed zombies and pirates together back before it was trendy. (Really!)
- “Mocha Futures”, published in Cyber Age Adventures
- Actually the second story in a series of sorts, but it reads as a stand-alone as well.
- Mocha Futures is a superhero story, but one that addresses some of the true costs of having a superpower
NON-FICTION
- Gamasutra.com
- I’m an irregular Gamasutra contributor, and really enjoy writing for the site. It gives me a chance to blend game design theory and practice with a desire to be completely goofy at the same time. I figure some of the nerdier stuff only has a prayer of being interesting if some humor can be added in!
- Probability for Game Designers
- Statistics for Game Designers
- The Siren Song of the Paper Cutter
- The Theory of Game Relativity
